• Wigandia caracasana
This shrub seems to be little known in UK and is a native of S. America. It is very attractive with large rounded deciduous leaves and large heads of small purpley blue flowers, rather like a Buddleia but with the flowers going up rather than down. The flowers are about 1” across and it’s a rather dramatic plant with the leaves giving a tropical look. It’s best planted in a sheltered position as the leaves can be torn by the wind. Good soil and free drainage but with plenty of water in hot weather. Only for sheltered, frost-free gardens or the conservatory. Min -3C
